CNG Lissner sale, lot 26

This specimen was lot 26 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $15,730. The catalog description[1] noted, "BELGIUM, Kingdom. Léopold I. 1830-1865. Proof Restrike AV 20 Francs Essai. Bruxelles (Brussels) mint. Dated 1835. Plain edge. In NGC encapsulation graded PF 64 Cameo. Gem cameo proof in a later strike. Léopold of Coburg, here crowned in an oak wreath (for achievement from knowledge and wisdom) instead of the usual laurel wreath (for achievement in war), demonstrated great ability in navigating Belgium’s course in her development in Europe." This rare type is listed for 1834-35, 1838 and 1841. The original issue had lettered edges, the restrikes had milled edge.
