Bavaria 1851 1/2 gulden
This specimen was lot 6059 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €16,000 (about US$20,676 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BAYERN, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH, Maximilian II. 1848-1864. Goldabschlag von den Stempeln des 1/2 Gulden 1851. Kopf r.//Wert und Jahresangabe in Eichenkranz. Rand mit vertieften Vierecken. GOLD. Von allergrößter Seltenheit. Feine Goldtönung, fast Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Sammlung Coenen. Exemplar der Slg. Bayern und das Haus Wittelsbach, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 108, Osnabrück 2006, Nr. 676 und der Sammlung Ferrari, Auktion Schulman, Amsterdam 1926, Nr. 736. (kingdom of Bavaria, Maximilian II, 1848-64, half gulden of 1851, struck in gold. Obverse: head right; reverse: value and date in oak wreath; edge stamped with squares. Extremely rare, fine gold toning, abut uncirculated.)"
The regular silver half gulden was struck 1848-64 and is common. This off-metal strike is not mentioned in the SCWC and may be unique.
