Künker sale 386, lot 6058

This specimen was lot 6058 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €5,000 (about US$6,461 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BAYERN, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH, Maximilian II. 1848-1864. Goldabschlag von den Stempeln des Ku.-2 Pfennig-Stücks 1850. Gekröntes, vierfeldiges Wappen mit Mittelschild zwischen Eichenzweigen//Wert und Jahresangabe. Rand geriffelt. GOLD. Von allergrößter Seltenheit. Feine Goldtönung, Stempelglanz, Exemplar der Sammlung Coenen. Exemplar der Slg. Bayern und das Haus Wittelsbach, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 108, Osnabrück 2006, Nr. 680. (kingdom of Bavaria, Maximilian II, 1848-64, two pfennig of 1850 struck in gold. Obverse: crowned quartered arms with escutcheon, oak wreath around; reverse: date and value. Reeded edge. Extremely rare, fine gold toning, uncirculated.)"

This type was struck in copper 1839-50 in decent quantities and is not rare. This off-metal strike is not mentioned in the SCWC and may be unique.
