Bavaria 1839 pfennig
This specimen was lot 6056 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €4,700 (about US$6,073 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BAYERN, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH, Ludwig I. 1825-1848. Goldabschlag von den Stempeln des Ku.-Pfennigs 1839. Gekröntes, vierfeldiges Wappen mit Mittelschild (3. Königswappen)//Wert und Jahresangabe. Mit glattem Rand. GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Feine Tönung, Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Sammlung Coenen. Exemplar der Slg. Bayern und das Haus Wittelsbach, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 108, Osnabrück 2006, Nr. 617 und der Sammlung Ferrari, Auktion Schulman, Amsterdam 1926, Nr. 541. (kingdom of Bavaria Louis I, 1825-48, penny of 1839, struck in gold. Obverse: crowned quartered arms with escutcheon; reverse: value and date. Plain edge. Extremely rare, fine toning, uncirculated.)"
This type was struck in copper 1839-50 in decent quantities and is not rare. This off-metal strike is not mentioned in the SCWC and may be unique.
