Bavaria 1793-AS thaler Dav-1961
The first specimen was lot 23979 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $2,115. The catalog description[1] noted, "Karl Theodor Taler 1793 AS, Bust right / Crowned arms, MS63 NGC. Lustrous and brilliant with a touch of toning and a few minor spots A Choice example of this pre-1800 type. Very scarce in this Choice condition." The second specimen was lot 24054 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pfalz-Sulzbach. Karl Theodor Taler 1793, MS65 PCGS. Well struck, with superb original luster and scattered touches of russet toning. This example has a different portrait than the 1793 pieces we have seen offered in two, or three, European auctions." This product of the Mannheim mint in the Palatinate is listed for 1790-93 and is rather scarce. In 1799 the French seized all of Germany west of the Rhine River and Bavarian issues for the Palatinate ceased.
