Jean Elsen sale 149, lot 1153

This specimen was lot 1153 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €120 (about US$163 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, BAVIERE, Karl Theodor (1777-1799), AR Taler, 1781, Munich. D/ B. à d. En dessous, ST. R/ Ecu couronné entre deux palmes. Rare Patine inégale. Très Beau. (Germany, electorate of Bavaria, Charles Theodore, 1777-99, silver thaler of 1781, Munich mint. Obverse: bust right, "ST" below; reverse: crowned arms between two palms. Rare, uneven toning, Very Fine.)"

This thaler was struck 1780-81 and is rather scarce. The elector issued thalers with arms on the reverse, such as shown here, and with the Madonna on the reverse, such as Dav-1964. As a rule, the Madonna reverses are more common than the shield reverses.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 27,78 g.

Catalog reference: KM 560.2, Hahn 348 var.; Dav-1958.
