This specimen was lot 1713 in Ponterio sale 182 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $381.88. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND. Basel. Taler, 1765-IH. NGC AU-55. Lustrous." The mythical creature on the reverse is a basilisk. The bishopric of Basel, which surrounded the town, also struck coins, mostly conventional portrait types. The city, however, struck a series of thalers, of which this type is among the more available.
