Basel 1793-H thaler Dav-1756
This specimen was lot 3303 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Taler 1793. Basilisk nach rechts blickend. Seltenere Variante. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (canton of Basel, thaler of 1793, basilisk facing right, rare variety, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The mythical creature on the reverse is a basilisk. The bishopric of Basel, which surrounded the town, also struck coins, mostly conventional portrait types. The city, however, struck a series of spectacular "city view" thalers, of which this type is among the scarcer. The other thaler for 1793 (Dav-1757) is much more available.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 25.68 g.
