This specimen was lot 1619 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,645. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND. Basel. Goldgulden, ND (1790). NGC MS-63. Nice mint luster." The goldgulden, struck in many localities in Central Europe, was normally equal to a ducat. If the SCWC is correct, Basel struck this goldgulden to a much heavier standard and to make things more confusing, issued two different types in 1790, both undated. However, the usual standard of 3.25 g, 0.917 fine gold seems more plausible. The canton also struck ducats to the usual 3.5 g standard. All are expensive.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7.64 g, 0.900 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-31; KM-182; HMZ-98.
