Sincona sale 91, lot 3079

This specimen was lot 3079 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 1,900 CHF (about US$2,511 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Basel, Stadt und Kanton, Sechsteltaler 1764, Basel. Basilisk mit Wappen. Rv. Wertzahl im Kranz, darunter die Jahreszahl. Kettenrand. Fast FDC. (Switzerland, canton of Basel, one sixth thaler of 1764, Basel mint. Obverse: basilisk with arms; reverse: value in wreath, date below. About uncirculated.)"

This type of 1764 and 1766 is scarce and was accompanied by a third thaler (KM 167) and half thaler (KM 168). The canton struck coinage only intermittently during the mid-eighteenth century.
