Basel 1766 1/6 thaler
The first specimen was lot 4514 in Sincona sale 39 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 140 CHF (about US$168 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Basel, Stadt, Sechsteltaler 1766. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (canton of Basel, sixth thaler of 1766. Very fine-extremely fine.)"
This specimen was lot 2559 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 140 CHF (about US$168 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND, Basel, Stadt und Kanton Basel, Sechsteltaler 1766. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (city and canton of Basel, one-sixth thaler of 1766. Very fine-extremely fine.)"
The mythical creature on the obverse is a basilisk. The bishopric of Basel, which surrounded the town, also struck coins, mostly conventional portrait types. This one-sixth thaler is also known for 1764.
