Bahamas 1985 2500 dollars
This specimen was lot 30126 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $18,212.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "BAHAMAS. 2,500 Dollars, 1985. Elizabeth II (1952-Present). NGC PROOF-69 ULTRA CAMEO. VERY RARE. From a mintage of only 37 pieces. Struck in 0.917 fine gold and containing a massive 11.9296 Troy ounces of gold AGW." This enormous object is a medallion masquerading as a coin. At $1280/oz, its melt value is $15,360. Columbus's discovery is the main historical event to have occurred in the Bahamas, which is why he is honored on KM 111, KM 112 (shown here), KM 116, KM 119, KM 121, KM 125, KM 126, KM 130, KM 131, KM 135, KM 151, KM 175 in gold and KM 107, KM 110, KM 120, KM 123, KM 124, KM 129, KM 132, KM 133, KM 134, KM 139, KM 153, KM 196, KM 197 in silver.
