Künker sale 352, lot 1738

This specimen was lot 1738 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$4,175 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BADEN, BADEN-DURLACH, MARKGRAFSCHAFT, SEIT 1806 GROSSHERZOGTUM, Ludwig, 1818-1830. 5 Gulden 1819. Mit glattem Rand. GOLD. R Nur 695 Exemplare geprägt. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz, Erworben 1938 bei der Firma Julius Jenke, München. (Germany, grand duchy of Baden, Louis, 1818-30, five gulden of 1819, with plain edge. Only 695 struck. Extremely fine to uncirculated. Bought from Julius Jenke in 1938.)"

This type was struck 1819-26 but only some of the 1819's have the engraver's initials. The margrave of Baden was promoted to grand duke by Napoloen and his state greatly enlarged. The grand duchy survived until 1918 and the collapse of the Wilhelmine empire.

Recorded mintage: 3,000 + 3,695 of KM 176.2 (w/o initials).
