Austrian Netherlands 1751 1/8 ducaton
The first specimen was lot 799 in Jean Elsen sale 107 (Brussels, December 2010) where it sold for 220 euro. The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR huitième de ducaton, 1751, Anvers. Droit: B. drapé et diad. à droite, avec pendant d'oreille. Revers: Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Superbe" (Duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresa (1740-80), silver one-eighth ducaton of 1751, Antwerp mint. Obverse: draped, diademed bust with earring. Reverse: crowned arms with the cross of Burgundy behind. Extremely Fine.)
The second specimen was lot 911 in Jean Elsen sale 127 (Brussels, December 2015), where it sold for €440 (about US$565 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR huitième de ducaton, 1751, Anvers. D/ B. dr. et diad. à d., avec pendant d'oreille. R/ Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Rare dans cette qualité. Superbe à Fleur de Coin. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, silver eighth of a ducaton of 1751, Antwerp mint. Obverse: draped and diademed bust to right with earring; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. Rare in this quality, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This type is recorded from Antwerp (shown here) and Bruges (lion mintmark) for 1749-53 and is doubtless rarer than the SCWC gives credit.
Reported Mintage: 100,000 for 1751-52.
