Künker sale 400, lot 394

This specimen was lot 394 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €12,000 (about US$15,568 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Franz Josef I. 1848-1916. Vereinskrone 1861, A, Wien. 10,00 g Feingold. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 64 PL (4785080-002). GOLD. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Nur 2.010 Exemplare geprägt. Prachtexemplar von polierten Stempeln. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, union crown of 1861, Vienna mint. Graded NGC MS64PL, very scarce, especially in this quality, only 2,010 pieces struck. Choice example with polished fields, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The krone was also minted by Saxony (KM 1197), Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel (Fr-750), Hannover (Fr-1183), Prussia (Fr-2437) and Bavaria (Fr-280) but does not seem to have been a success, as survivors are few. This issue, minted 1858-65 at Vienna, Milan, Venice and Karlsburg, is rare. The Austrians dropped the krone after 1865.

Recorded mintage: 2,010, a better date.

Specification: 11.11 g, 0.900 fine gold, 24 mm diameter, .321 troy oz AGW.
