Austria 1851-A 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 1497 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 7,250 CHF (about US$8,801 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916. 1/2 Konventionstaler 1851 A, Wien. Belorbeerter Kopf nach links. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. FDC. NGC MS65. Prachtexemplar. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph, 1848-1916, half thaler of 1851, Vienna mint. Obverse: bearded head left. Very rare, especially in this condition, Uncirculated, Cabinet piece.)"
This rare type of 1848-51 may have been merely a pattern, similar to the equally scarce thaler (Dav-15).
