Austria 1802-G 7 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 72517 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. 7 Kreuzer, 1802-G. Franz II. PCGS MS-63. Overstruck on 1795 12 Kreuzer (KM-2137). Sharp and brilliantly lustrous. With mostly argent surfaces save for lightly speckled toning." This type was struck 1802 only at mints A, B, C, E, F and G (Gunzburg, shown here). It is too common to have been made all in one year, so perhaps it was struck with a frozen date for several years. In this period, Austria was losing wars with Napoleon and was in desperate financial straits and many expedients were tried.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date.
Specification: 4.68 g, 0.250 fine silver.
Catalog reference: KM-2129.
