Künker Auction 439, lot 2319

This specimen was lot 2319 in Künker sale 439 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €1,900 (about US$2,614 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Franz II., 1792-1804. Dukat 1802 A, Wien. GOLD. Min. Probierspur am Rand, sehr schön. Aus der Sammlung Kommerzialrat Dr. Herbert Wenzel, Wien. Erworben 1961 bei der Firma Werkner, Innsbruck. (Holy Roman Empire, Francis II, 1792-1804, ducat of 1802, Vienna mint. Minor tool mark on the edge, very fine.)"

Friedberg lists this type for 1792-1830 but does not distinguish between the issues struck for Francis as Holy Roman Emperor (KM 1886, legend "FRANC II D G R IMP S A GE HV BO REX", struck 1792-1804) and those struck for him as emperor of Austria (KM 2167, legend "FRANCISCVS II. D.G.ROM. ET HAER. AVST.IMP.", struck 1804-06). The first one is shown here. It was struck at Vienna (shown here), Kremnitz (B), Prague (C), Karlsburg (E) and Nagybanya (G). All are priced in the SCWC at their bullion value.
