Künker sale 400, lot 379

This specimen was lot 379 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €9,000 (about US$11,676 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. Dukat 1773, Hall. GOLD. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Sehr attraktives Exemplar, winz. Kratzer, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, ducat of 1773, Hall mint. Very scarce in this quality, very attractive example, minor scratches, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

Most of the Austrian ducats struck in 1773, such as Fr-431, bear the portrait of emperor Joseph II. This one, struck at the Hall mint, shows the redoubtable Maria Theresia. It was struck 1768-79.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.48 g.

Catalog reference: KM 1858, Eypeltauer 186; M./T. 1279, Fr-416.
