Künker Auction 441, lot 4872

This specimen was lot 4872 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,302 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Franz I., 1745-1765. Konv.-Taler 1753 P-R, Prag. Münzmeister Bohumil Schaumberger. R Fast vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines sächsischen Naturwissenschaftlers. (Holy Roman Empire, Francis I, 1745-65, convention thaler of 1753, Prague mint. Rare, about extremely fine.)"

This design was intended to be the standard thaler struck throughout the Hapsburg domains during the reign of emperor Franz I, husband of Maria Theresia. This type was struck 1751-65 at Kremnitz (Dav-1157, mintmark KB), Prague (mintmark PR, shown here), Karlsburg (mintmark CA), Vienna (Dav-1153, mintmark WI) and Hall (Dav-1155, mintmark HA). The weight was adjusted in 1751 from the reichsthaler to the convention standard (28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver).
