Sincona sale 101, lot 3315

This specimen was lot 3315 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 850 CHF (about US$1,281 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH Franz I. 1745-1765. Taler 1753, Hall. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Fast FDC. Herrliche Patina. (Holy Roman Empire, Francis I, 1745-65, thaler of 1753, Hall mint. Rare in this condition, About Mint State, Most attractively toned.)"

On the death of Charles VI in 1740, the redoubtable Maria Theresia was crowned Archduchess of Austria and queen of Hungary but, being a woman, could not be given the imperial crown. Therefore, after much debate and a war fomented by Frederick the Great of Prussia, her husband Francis of Lorraine was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1745. This thaler was issued 1751-65 from the Hall mint and is common.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common for the series.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 28.12 g.
