This specimen was lot 3179 in Künker Auction 426 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €380 (about US$538 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Franz I., 1745-1765. Konv.-Taler 1748 WI, Wien. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön +. (Holy Roman Empire, Francis I, 1745-65, convention thaler of 1748, Vienna mint. Handsome patina, very fine or better.)

Franz. (Francis I Stephen, *December 8, 1708 Nancy, †August 18, 1765 Innsbruck, son of Duke Leopold of Lorraine and Elisabeth Charlotte of Orléans, came to the Viennese court in 1723 and was educated there. In 1729 he became Duke of Lorraine, in 1730 Duke of Bar, and in 1732 Governor of Hungary. After his marriage to Maria Theresa in 1736, he renounced Lorraine in favor of Stanislaus Leszczynski and became Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1737. Crowned German Emperor on October 4, 1745, Francis I withdrew from politics and devoted himself to his scientific and collecting interests. In 1763, he successfully began the restructuring of Austria's state finances, which was interrupted, however, by his sudden death.)"

This design was intended to be the standard thaler struck throughout the Hapsburg domains during the reign of emperor Franz I, husband of Maria Theresia. The type was struck 1746-50 and is common. It was minted at Karlsburg, Hall (Dav-1155), Prague (Dav-1158), Kremnitz (Dav-1156) and Vienna (shown here). The early issues (Dav-1152, 1746-50, shown here) were struck as reichs thalers and the later issues (Dav-1153, 1751-56) were struck as convention thalers (lower weight).

Recorded mintage: unknown.
