Austria 1747-CA thaler Dav-1160
This specimen was lot 4870 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,577 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Franz I., 1745-1765. Reichstaler 1747 C-A, Karlsburg. R Hübsche Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich/vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines sächsischen Naturwissenschaftlers. (Holy Roman Empire, Francis I, 1745-65, thaler of 1747, Karlsburg mint. Rare, handsome patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This design was intended to be the standard thaler struck throughout the Hapsburg domains during the reign of emperor Franz I, husband of Maria Theresia. This type was struck 1746-50 at Kremnitz (Dav-1156, mintmark KB), Prague (mintmark PR), Karlsburg (mintmark CA, shown here), Vienna (Dav-1152, mintmark WI) and Hall (Dav-1155, mintmark HA). The weight was adjusted in 1751 to the convention standard (28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver).
