Austria 1749-HA thaler Dav-1155
This specimen was lot 31178 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Holy Roman Empire. Taler, 1749-HA. Hall Mint. Franz I. PCGS MS-62. A very attractively toned crown that presents vibrant iridescence." This type was struck 1746-50 to the riechstahler standard at Kremnitz (Dav-1156), Prague, Vienna, Karlsburg and Hall (shown here). It was one of the first attempts to strike a unified coinage for the Hapsburg domains. The issues of 1751-65 were struck as convention thalers (28.06 g, 0.833 fine). Davenport lumps them together but the SCWC quite properly separates them as KM 2037 and KM 2038.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28.82 g, 0.875 fine silver.
