Austria 1744 1/4 thaler
This specimen was lot 72021 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it sold for $446.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. 1/4 Taler, 1744. Maria Theresa (1740-1780). PCGS MS-63 Secure Holder. Sharply struck with attractive multi colored iridescent toning and strong underlying luster. Exceptional eye appeal." This type of 1740-45 is the last issue of this denomination at this weight standard. After this, the thaler was reduced from 28.82 g, 0.875 fine silver to 28.06 silver, 0.833 fine silver. In the opening years of Maria Theresia's reign, she was fighting Frederick the Great's conquest of Silesia and revolt in Hungary.
