Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74314

This specimen was lot 74314 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Gulden Taler, 1573. Hall Mint. Archduke Ferdinand. PCGS AU-58. Valued at 60 Kreuzer, (a full size Taler would have been valued at 72 Kreuzer). The Gulden Taler is actually scarcer than the full sized Taler and is seen only infrequently." By 1600, the gulden had slipped from 5/6 thaler to 2/3 thaler, where it remained until the mid-eighteenth century.
