Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 55477
SB124-55477 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 55477 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Holy Roman Empire. 60 Kreuzer (Guldentaler), 1572. Vienna Mint. Maximilian II. PCGS Genuine--Scratch, VF Details. Misattributed to Bohemia on the holder." This particular type is a very early gulden, and is a product of the Vienna mint. Davenport does not list it in his catalog of thalers as it is too light. The guldenthaler would soon be shortened to gulden and its weight slide from five-sixths to two-thirds of a thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 24.6 g, 0.931 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-48.
