Künker sale 406, lot 4478

This specimen was lot 4478 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,674 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Erzherzog Maximilian als Landesfürst von Tirol, 1612-1618. Doppelter Reichstaler 1617, Ensisheim. RR Feine Patina, Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, vorzüglich. (Austria, archduke Maximilian as land prince of Tyrol, 1612-18, double thaler of 1617, Ensisheim mint. Very rare, fine patina, planchet defects on the edge, extremely fine.)"

Archduke Maximilian III (1558-1618) ruled in Tyrol after 1595 and was briefly pretender to the throne of Poland. His cousin, archduke Maximilian Ernst (1583-1616), was the younger brother of emperor Ferdinand III but never succeeded to any throne. Another double thaler of 1617 is KM 207/Dav-3045, struck for Matthias.
