Stephen Album sale 50, lot 2302

This specimen was lot 2302 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "DURRANI: Shah Zaman, 1793-1801, AR rupee, Mashhad, AH1213, struck by the Afsharid ruler Nadir II, but in the name of his protector Shah Zaman; lovely strike, choice VF-XF, R." The Durranis or Saddozais established themselves in Afghanistan in the 1750's but had lost large chunks of their empire during the reign of Shah Zaman. This type was struck AH 1212-1215; varieties and mulings exist. The very similar KM E640, also from the Mashhad mint, has the date on the obverse. Shah Zaman was captured and blinded by his brother Mahmud Shah in 1801 but survived in exile until 1845.
