Afghanistan AH 1211/5 rupee KM-A444
This specimen was lot 74415 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "AFGHANISTAN. Rupee, AH 1211 Year 5 (1796). Kabul Mint. Shah Zaman. NGC MS-61. A lovely Mint State example, with rich lustrous eye appeal and a strong details throughout." The Durranis or Saddozais established themselves in Afghanistan in the 1750's but had lost large chunks of their empire during the reign of Shah Zaman. This type was struck years 5, 6 and 7 and has a very low catalog value. Shah Zaman was captured and blinded by his brother Mahmud Shah in 1801 but survived in exile until 1845.
