Sincona Auction 103, lot 1201

This specimen was lot 1201 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 450 CHF (about US$686 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Aargau. 2 Rappen 1808, Aarau. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich-FDC. (Switzerland, canto of Aargau, two rappen of 1808, Aarau mint. Very rare in this condition, About Uncirculated.)"

Aargau, a small canton on the Rhine between Zurich and Basel, struck coins until 1831. This type was struck 1808, 1811-16. It is common in all grades. Ten rappen = 4 kreuzer = one batzen = 1/40 thaler.

Recorded mintage: 92,000.

Specification: 1.3 g, billon, 18 mm diameter, plain edge, this specimen 1.38 g.
