Sincona sale 70, lot 3016

This specimen was lot 3016 in Sincona sale 70 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 325 CHF (about US$431 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Aargau | Kanton, 2 Rappen 1812, Aarau. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. FDC. (Switzerland, canton of Aargau, two rappen of 1812, Aarau mint. Very rare in this condition, Uncirculated.)"

Aargau, a small canton on the Rhine between Zurich and Basel, struck coins until 1831. This type was struck 1808, 1811-16. It is common in all grades. Ten rappen = 4 kreuzer = one batzen = 1/40 thaler.
