Jean Elsen sale 162, lot 1478

This specimen was lot 1478 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$3,049 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Léopold II (1790-1792), AV souverain, 1792 B, Kremnitz. Type brabançon. D/ T. laurée à d. R/ Écu ovale couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Très rare. Griffe au revers. (duchy of Brabant, Leopold II, 1790-92, gold souverain of 1792, Brabant style, Kremnitz mint. Obverse: laureate head right; reverse: crowned oval arms over a Burgundian cross, order chain around. Very rare, scratch on reverse, Very Fine.)"

This type is filed under the Austrian Netherlands, an area which is now Belgium and Luxembourg. Similar coins are known from Vienna, Günzburg, Venice, Brussels, Milan and Hall. The type was struck 1792-98 and previous souverains d'or date back to the reign of Maria Theresa.
