Jean Elsen sale 159, lot 866
JE159-0866r.jpg

This specimen was lot 866 in Jean Elsen sale 159 (Brussels, June 2024), where it sold for €80 (about US$103 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Léopold II (1790-1792), AR plaquette (14 liards), 1792, Bruxelles. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, accostée de la valeur. R/ Aigle impériale couronnée. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Leopold II, 1790-92, silver plaquette of 14 liards, Brussels mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross under a crown divides the value; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

This denomination, which doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the coinage of the Austrian Netherlands, was struck 1755-94. This type was struck for Leopold II in 1790-92. It is not rare. Four liards = one sol, 54 sols = one kronenthaler. Some 14 liards (KM 59) were struck in 1792 for Francis II.

Recorded mintage: 272,000 plus 52,000 of KM 59.

Specification: 0.583 fine silver; this specimen 2,73 g.

Catalog reference: KM 39, W. 1163; VH 876.
