Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74501
SB1122-74501r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74501 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 12 Sols, 1726-A. Paris Mint. Louis XV. NGC MS-63. Also valued as 1/10 Ecu. This type was generally spent, not saved, so to find one with original luster and a bold strike is a find indeed! This is the type with olive branches surrounding a crowned oval shield." Shown is a dixième d'écu aux branches d'olivier of the Paris mint (mintmark "A"). This coin was part of the great coinage reform of Cardinal Fleury which finally terminated the manipulations which had disrupted the economy since the 1690's. Many more dates are known than are listed in the SCWC, which lists only 1726 and 1727 for the Tours mint while Droulers[1] adds 1728, 1729 and 1730. The tenth écu was the ancien régime version of a dime tho never struck in sufficient numbers to really convert France to a decimal currency.

Recorded mintage: est. 2,413,223, by far the highest mintage date.

Specification: 2.25 g, 0.917 fine silver, reeded edge, designed by J. C. Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 849, Dr/2 № 582, KM-481.1.
