Künker Auction 425, lot 2594

This specimen was lot 2594 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €4,000 (about US$5,664 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN AB 1871 · WEIMARER REPUBLIK, 5 Reichsmark 1929 A. Lessing. Äußerst selten in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar. Stempelglanz. Das Stück ist von außergewöhnlicher Qualität wie sie praktisch nie vorkommt. Es könnte sich auch um eine mattierte Polierte Platte handeln (Matt Proof). (Germany, five mark of 1929, Lessing. Extremely rare in this quality, cabinet example, uncirculated, could be a matte proof.)"

This type, issued 1929, was struck in some numbers in Berlin ("A", shown here), Munich ("D"), Muldenhutten ("E"), Stuttgart ("F"), Karlsruhe ("G") and Hamburg ("J"). It is among the more available of the Weimar commemoratives. We have included it in our category of thalers based on its size, even tho it is only 0.500 fine. The auctioneers must have convinced the bidders that this was a matte proof as claimed, as this example realized ten times the usual price.

Recorded mintage: 87,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 25 g, 0.500 fine silver, 36 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 61, Dav-969, J. 336.
