Russia 1859 ruble rev Heritage 3019-25396.jpg

The first specimen was lot 1533 in UBS sale 85 (Zürich, September 2010), where it sold for 650 CHF (about US$742 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RUSSLAND Alexander II. 1855-1881 Rubel 1859, St. Petersburg. Denkmal für Nikolaus I. Kr. Gutes sehr schön." (Russia, Alexander I (1855-81), ruble of 1859, St. Petersburg mint, memorial for Nicholas I. Good very fine.)

The second specimen was lot 25396 in Heritage sale 3019 (Chicago, April 2012), where it sold for $2,760. The catalog description[2] noted, "Alexander II, Nicholas I Commemorative Rouble 1859, by Lyalin, Bust left / Nicholas I Monument, AU58 NGC. Well struck with a bright obverse and moderately toned reverse. The fields are somewhat reflective with light handling marks." This one-year type, while expensive, is considerably more available than the regular issue ruble (Y25) for the year.
