Hesse-Cassel 1828 5 thaler Fr-1293

Sincona sale 18, lot 1422

This specimen was lot 1422 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 7,500 (about US$9,882 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"5 Taler 1828. Kassel Sehr selten, 952 Exemplare geprägt. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, electorate of Hesse-Cassel, five thaler of 1828, very rare, 952 struck, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This denomination, like all the gold issues of Hesse-Cassel, is rare and expensive. The five thaler was equal to a Prussian friedrichs d'or. This type is noted for 1823-29.

Specification: 6.65 g, 0.900 fine gold, .192 troy oz AGW, this specimen 6.61 g.
