This specimen was lot 55684 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hesse-Cassel. 1/6 Taler, 1826. Wilhelm II. PCGS MS-63. From the Collection of Richard Evans Norton (1872-1946)." The electors of Hesse-Cassel issued this denomination in various types 1803-56; this type of 1823-31 is rather scarce. Most German minors are rarely available in nice condition in the United States and are disdained by American collectors. Hesse-Cassel was swallowed up by the Prussians after the Austrian war of 1866. The sister state, Hesse-Darmstadt, survived until the collapse of the Wilhelmine empire in 1918.
