This specimen was lot 891 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 28 (Winter Park, FL, November 2020), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "Hesse-Cassel (German States), taler, 1822, Wilhelm II, ex-Gibbs. VF with rich rainbow toning, small planchet flaw at date, scarce type with a mintage of only 3,456 coins. Pedigreed to the Zeitlos Collection and purchased from the Howard D. Gibbs collection and subsequent Hess/Leu auction of March 19, 1957, lot #1390, with collector's envelope." This type was struck 1821-22 and is expensive. The thaler's weight was reduced to 18.52 g in 1858 but the purity was raised to 0.900 fine. Hesse-Cassel was swallowed up by the Prussians after the Austrian war of 1866. The sister state, Hesse-Darmstadt, survived until the collapse of the Wilhelmine empire in 1918.
