Salzburg 1748 thaler Dav-1245
This specimen was lot 2118 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"RDR / ÖSTERREICH Salzburg, Erzbistum Andreas Jakob von Dietrichstein, 1747-1753. Taler 1748. Brustbild im Talar nach rechts. Rv. Wappen auf verzierter, mit Kreuz, Bischofsstab und Schwert besteckter Wappenkartusche unter Legatenhut. Kl. Kr. Fast vorzüglich. (Archbishopric of Salzburg, Andreas Jacob of Dietrichstein, 1747-53, thaler of 1748. Obverse: bust in cardinal's robe to right; reverse: ornate arms with bishop's staff and sword and cardinal's hat; choice extremely fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg, an ecclesiatical state between Austria and Bavaria, was blessed with abundant silver mines. This type was issued in 1748 and 1753 only and is scarce for a Salzburg thaler.
