Künker sale 384, lot 3110

This specimen was lot 3110 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €380 (about US$491 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Andreas Jakob von Dietrichstein, 1747-1753. Reichstaler 1750. Mozetta ohne Knöpfe. R Feine Patina, min. Korrosionsstelle, sehr schön/sehr schön-vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Andrew Jacob of Dietrichstein, 1747-53, thaler of 1750, cap without buttons. Rare, fine patina, slight traces of corrosion, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1748 and 1750 and is scarcer than most Salzburg thalers. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: Silver, this specimen 29.09 g.
