Sincona sale 86, lot 1772

This specimen was lot 1772 in Sincona sale 86 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$1,077 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Elizabeth II. 1952-2022. Proof 2 Pounds 2007, Royal Mint Llantrisant. Gold. Commemorating the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade. Selten. Nur 1'000 Exemplare geprägt, Mit Originaletui und Zertifikat. Rare. Only 1,000 pieces struck. NGC PF68 ULTRA CAMEO. With original box and certificate. No. 721 of 1,000 sets."

Other two pound coins for 2007 included KM 1072 (St. George and the dragon), KM 1076 (Act of Union), KM 1078 (Britannia) and KM 994 (technology). When Britain abolished the slave trade in 1807, she removed herself from the single most profitable trans-Atlantic commerce. The other participants (France, Netherlands, Spain and Portugal) resisted following suit but British domination of the sea eventually forced them to cooperate, altho it wasn't until the 1860's that the seaborne trade was finally extirpated. The internal, land based African slave trade survived into the twentieth century.

Recorded mintage: 8,445,000 plus 50,000 proofs in bimetallic, 7,095 proofs plus pieforts in silver, 1,000 proofs in gold.

Specification: 12 g, 28.4 mm diameter, bimetallic or 12 g, 28.4 mm diameter, 0.925 fine silver or 15.97 g, 28.4 mm diameter, 0.916 fine gold.
