Bavaria 1719 maximilian d'or Fr-226
This specimen was lot 33641 in Heritage sale 3106 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,170. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Bavaria. Maximilian II Emanuel gold Maximilian d'Or 1719 AU58 NGC, Munich mint. With slight friction across the highpoints in accordance with the technical grade designation and quietely shimmering surfaces, this is a handsome representative of the trade coinage issue." Maximilian II Emanuel was duke and elector of Bavaria 1679-1726 and was deposed more than once by the Austrians. This type was struck 1715-26 and all dates are priced the same. The early eighteenth century saw the appearance of a number of self-titled gold coins ("maximilian d'or," "carolin d'or," "friedrich d'or"), presumably inspired by the French "louis d'or." We would say that this is a copy of the Prussian half william d'or except it appeared twenty years before.
