Jean Elsen sale 125, lot 1614

This specimen was lot 1614 in Jean Elsen sale 125 (Brussels, June 2015), where it sold for €280 (about US$373 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, BAVIERE, Maximilien II Emmanuel (1679-1726), AV Max d'or, 1720, Munich. D/ T. à d., coiffée d'une grande perruque. R/ La Madone à l'enfant trônant de f., ten. l'écu couronné de Bavière. Beau à Très Beau. (Bavaria, Maximilian II Emmanuel (1679-1726), gold max d'or of 1720, Munich mint. Obverse: head to right, wearing a large peruke; reverse: Madonna and Child enthroned, bearing the arms of Bavaria. Fine to very fine.)"

The SCWC lists this type for 1715-26. The early eighteenth century saw the appearance of a number of self-titled gold coins ("maximilian d'or," "carolin d'or," "friedrich d'or"), presumably inspired by the French "louis d'or."

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 6.65 g, 0.900 fine gold, .192 troy oz AGW; this specimen is 6,25 g.

Catalog reference: KM 388, Hahn 206; Fr-226.
