Bavaria 1722 ducat Fr-241
This specimen was lot 1758 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$3,062 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BAYERN, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM, Maximilian II. Emanuel, 1679-1726. Dukat 1722, München. Auswurfmünze anläßlich der Vermählung seines Sohnes Karl Albert mit Maria Amalia, Tochter Josefs I. von Österreich. Die verzierten Buchstaben AB (Austria, Bavaria) verschlungen, darüber Kurhut//Neun Zeilen Schrift. GOLD. R Leicht gewellt, kl. Kratzer, vorzüglich. (Germany, electorate of Bavaria, Maximilian II Emanuel, 1679-1726, ducat of 1722, Munich mint. Largesse coin on the occasion of the marriage of his son Karl Albert to Maria Amalia, daughter of Joseph I of Austria. Obverse: the ornate letters AB (for Austria, Bavaria) entwined, above the electoral cap; reverse: nine line inscription. Rare, slightly wavy, minor scratches, extremely fine.)"
Maximilian Emanuel's support of the French side during the War of the Spanish Succession led to the Austrian occupation of his electorate and his exile in Belgium. Returning to Munich in 1715 on the signing of the peace, he spent the rest of his reign trying to repair relations with Vienna. This ducat, showing Austria and Bavaria intertwined, was likely struck when the elector's son married the emperor's niece. The emperor was more impressed with the corps of Bavarian soldiers sent in 1717 to help him fight the Turks.
