Bavaria 1723-M 1/2 maximilian d'or Fr-227
This specimen was lot 20482 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Bavaria. 1/2 Maximilian d'Or, 1723-M. Maximilian II Emanuel (1679-1726). NGC AU-58. Bare bust. Handsome portrait with a reverse Madonna and Child that exhibits struck through adjustment marks. Highly appealing deep orange toned luster, a seldom encountered type and quite elusive in this high state of preservation." The SCWC lists this type for 1715-25. The early eighteenth century saw the appearance of a number of self-titled gold coins ("maximilian d'or," "carolin d'or," "friedrich d'or"), presumably inspired by the French "louis d'or."
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
