Sincona sale 97, lot 1219

This specimen was lot 1219 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 825 CHF (about US$1,197 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Bayern, seit 1623 Kurfürstentum, seit 1806 Königreich. Maximilian II. Emanuel, 1679-1726. Max d'or 1717, München. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, electorate of Bavaria, Maximilian II Emanuel, 1679-1726, gold max of 1717, Munich mint. Very Fine-Extremely Fine.)"

Maximilian II Emanuel was duke and elector of Bavaria 1679-1726 and was deposed more than once by the Austrians. This type was struck 1715-26 and all dates are priced the same. The early eighteenth century saw the appearance of a number of self-titled gold coins ("maximilian d'or," "carolin d'or," "friedrich d'or"), presumably inspired by the French "louis d'or." We would say that this is a copy of the Prussian half william d'or except it appeared twenty years before.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.65 g, 0.900 fine gold, this specimen 6.44 g.

Catalog reference: KM 388, Hahn 206. Fr-226.
