Bavaria 1719 3 kreuzer
The first specimen was lot 22578 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $65. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Bavaria. 3 Kreuzer, 1719. Maximillian II Emanuel. NGC AU-55. A boldly struck and fully detailed example of the type with attractive peripheral toning. It is struck slightly off center, as is typical for this issue, on a curved planchet (as made)." The second specimen was lot 3482 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €100 (about US$131 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"BAYERN, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM: Maximilian II. Emanuel, 1679-1726. 3 Kreuzer (Groschen) 1719, München. Vorzüglich. (Germany, electorate of Bavaria, Maximilian II, 1679-1726, three kreuzer or groschen of 1719, Munich mint. Extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1715-26 and is common. The curl is from the use of roller dies, popular in central Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Note that on both specimens, "LAND" has been corrected from "LNAD".
