Scotland (1637-42)-B F 20 pence KM-74
This specimen was lot 46022 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "SCOTLAND. 20 Pence, ND (1637-42). Edinburgh Mint; mm: B/F. Charles I. NGC AU Details--Cleaned. Third Coinage, Falconer's First issue. Somewhat bright from an old cleaning but attractively re-toned in colorful iridescence. Well defined and nicely centered, without any significant abrasions. A pleasing specimen. SCARCE at this level of sharpness. From the Loch Ness Collection." This denomination was struck in numerous varieties (KM 70, 73, 74, KM 75) and was accompanied by 60 shillings, 12 shillings, 6 shillings, 1/2 merk, 40 pence and 30 shillings. This coin would have traded for an English silver penny. A "B" mintmark appears on the obverse and an "F" on the reverse. Scottish coinage ended in 1707 with the Act of Union.
